- New Report Indicates World Reserves Of Rock Phosphate Adequate For Long-term
October 20, 2010 – "The International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) and its predecessor, the Potash & Phosphate Institute (PPI), have long promoted the effective and efficient use of phosphorus (P) fertilizer in crop production. Without balanced and appropriate P input, crop yields are reduced, quality is diminished, and the potential for adverse environmental consequences are increased. However, excessive P input in crop production, usually associated with manure application, can pose specific and well known challenges. Therefore, P input in crop production warrants careful and judicious consideration on the part of farmers and their advisors, regardless of crop or country. - Ontario Eco-Fees
On July 20, 2010, the Ontario Government announced it would be suspending retail collection of eco-fees on a wide range of consumer products, including most lawn and garden fertilizers in bags of 30 kilograms or less. The expanded eco-fees came into effect on July 1 under Phase II of Ontario’s Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste (MHSW) Program. The MHSW program is managed by a government mandated organization – Stewardship Ontario. The suspension is for 90 days while the Government reviews the policy.
It was noted by the Ontario Government that this suspension does NOT include products from Phase I of MHSW. Phase I began in July of 2008 and consumer fees will continue to be collected on these products. However, only bagged fertilizer products in packages of 30 kg or less requiring registration – primarily lawn weed and feed products containing pesticides – were included in Phase 1.
It is business as usual for the MHSW Program. Stewardship Ontario will continue to collect, transport, and process all designated materials. CFI will be working to influence the Government’s review of the policy. [More]

Humankind is largely fed by food grown with synthetic chemical fertilizer. Because synthetic fertilizer requires a plentiful supply of nitrogen, inventing a process to fix it in ammonia was daunting. Attempts were made for over 100 years. Then in 1909 Fritz Haber, a German chemist, solved the problem in principal. In 1910, Carl Bosch, pioneering new engineering methods, commercialized the process. Known as the Haber-Bosch Process, it is now responsible for growing about half of the world’s food. It was one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Without it, 30-40% of the world’s population would not be alive. [More]
